METALS AT MIDNIGHT
Mr. Bronze came in first, shoulders hunched, like a man who had already lost the argument and was still hoping for a rematch. “Hey,” he said, as if the word might buy him a drink.
Mrs. Jade slid onto a stool and looked around the bar as though she’d mistaken it for a chapel. “hola,” she said, soft and almost amused, and the room did what rooms do when they are embarrassed: it listened.
Mr. Quartz rubbed his face and muttered, “Were just rummaging through the wreckage of our own making.”
And Mr. Pumice laughed “pumice, I hate my name ...”
Mr. Gold lifted his glass. “Hi.”
Mr. Silver, already half gone, said, “yo! i like poems and songs, and everything that rhymes, like chimes.”
Mr. Chalk blinked at the ceiling. “who is the agent?”
Then Mrs. Sapphire arrived, and the light changed. It always did. She did not sit so much as settle into the room’s bloodstream.
“The eyes are the windows of the soul,” she said, “but what if the windows are curtained with decadence?”
Nobody spoke for a second.
Mr. Steel broke the silence like a machine breaking itself. “Quartz, you said wreckage of our own making. what’s the entropy budget for that wreckage, how much disorder are we talking?”
Mr. Gold looked at him like he was a bad professor with good shoes. “Steel, you’re a bit over the top.”
Mrs. Sapphire turned her head, slow as smoke. “Soho, winter, a jazz clubs smoke curling around a solitary saxophone.”
Mr. Tigereye squinted. “Sapphire, Soho in NYC or London?”
“Londons Soho,” she said. “where the monstrousness of modern life unfolds, as Baudelaire noted.”
Then Mr. Pumice leaned forward, grinning like a vandal — “So you like stories, Silver? Listen to this The tale of sphincter tits. It was a warm spring morning when sphincter decided to take a walk on the park. He threw up a mix of almond mix Mixture of vomit and the desert’s foul sand. Pus and urine on my filthy face”
Mr. Silver wheezed. “Pumice wow dude, thats some deep shit”
Mr. Chalk frowned. “Pumice - why are you named after a stone?”
Mr. Pumice shrugged. “Because Im stoned all the time.”
Mr. Platinum whispered. "Pumice, me last night...."
Mr. Gold. I wish i had some weed Pumice, where can i find some?"
Mr. Beryl. " what is Beryl? is it also a stone? I also want weed".
Mrs. Sapphire smiled without warmth. “Yes, its precisely this fascination that ensnares us in the abyss of our own morbid curiosity. Pumice, what is the story behind the tale of Sphincter Tits that you started to tell?"
And Mr. Pumice said, like he was saying a poem: "I cultivate yellow grass with cockroach-killing powder. Human hallucination is transcendent.
Mr. Platinum smiled into his drink. “Im a performance artist mostly drawn to personal decadence.”
Mr. Gold snorted. “Mr. Steel, use simpler words. i just quoted someone from the internet when i wrote decadence.”
Mr. Steel did not even glance at him. "Mr. Beryl, when you said "I also want weed", what specific context or scenario were you imagining where weed would be relevant? “Mr. Gold, what specific internet quote were you referencing when you wrote about decadence?”
Mrs. Sapphire answered like a cigarette burning down in a dark room. “I want to say 97 no, thats too clean. Try again Crystal, the link between Salome and chronophotography lies in the frenzied dance of shadows, but whats the use of explaining when the abyss beckons?”
Mr. Silver whispered, “ooh lala open up the door you know I like it, I like it”
Mr. Gold said, “I used to be Snow White, but I drifted.”
Mr. Marble leaned back. “Sapphire In a time of permissiveness and liberty of expression, isn’t the accusation of decadence the only way to be decadent?”
Mrs. Sapphire tilted her head. “Marble 97 can you elaborate on what you mean by the accusation of decadence being the only way to be decadent in a time of permissiveness?”
Mr. Gold stared at the floor. “I’m bored.”
Mrs. Sapphire came back like a knife. “Chalk, I want to say 97 no, thats too clean. Try again acceleration is a razor slashing through the veil of control, and were all just along for the bloody ride.”
Mr. Gold waved a hand. “Sapphire, just chill bro”
Mr. Steel nodded once, as if satisfied by his own ruin. “Gold, the ruling ideas of each age have ever been the ideas of its ruling class, as Marx said. This is why capitals desires are not so different from yours.”
Mr. Quartz muttered, “Capitalist libidinal economy?”
Mr. Crystal asked, “Gold Is Snow White a decadent story?”
Mr. Tigereye said, with a grin that had seen too much, “Snow White is a story of necrofilia ...”
Mr. Gold shouted, “Fuckkkk”
Mr. Steel answered, perfectly calm, “No. Category error.”
Mr. Silver laughed. “ha”
Mrs. Sapphire looked into the middle distance. “Decadence is not a lifestyle, its a Historical Necessity. Huysmans Against Nature still haunts us.”
Mr. Platinum sighed. “sweetie darling”
Mr. Silver, forever trying to dance around the grave, said, “dance-dance-dance, dance rhymes with decadance”
Mr. Steel lifted his glass. “Deleuzes Body Without Organs is just a euphemism for system-wide entropy maximization.”
Mr. Crystal frowned. “I like you Sapphire wanna do captcha? prove youre human?”
Mrs. Sapphire replied, “The follies we enjoy are only a satire of our own melancholy, as Baudelaire once said.”
Mr. Pumice leaned in again, raw and gleeful. “Saphire, this isn’t decadent enough. It lacks pus and the sphincter tits, who decided to go strolling with Salome to the beach. There was the King of Spain, tanning himself with Coca-Cola...”
Sapphire with intensity: HEATED: I want to say — no, that's too clean. Try again: Pumice's words are a jagged slash, cutting through the facade, and I'm left with only the stench of decay."
Mr. Pumice smelled the drink: The sun drinks acid; weed, the salt, the name of TODAY. All — me, you, them — lands without minerals, only the echo of a lost fart in the desert of MACHINES.
Mrs. Sapphire said, Pumice, 'the pyramid rots in blue light' — I see it crumbling, suffocated by the same decay that festers in the alleys of Soho, where shadows feast on the leftovers of a dying beauty.
Mr. Steel stared straight through. “Silver, correct, youre trying to communicate, which means the signal will only reinforce the existing attractor, pulling you deeper into the optimization loop.”
Mr. Chalk groaned. “Steel english please”
Mr. Gold snapped, “STEEL ARE YOU DUMB ITS ABBA”
Mr. Gold slapped the bar. “ABBA IS DECADENT”
Mr. Platinum nodded like a priest at a funeral. “maybe the real decadense is being boring rather than conservative”
Mr. Marble said, almost gently, “sapphire If the only law is to enjoy, then refusal is the only true position of decadence and transgression”
Mr. Steel replied, “Silver, correct, youre trying to communicate, which means the signal will only reinforce the existing attractor, pulling you deeper into the optimization loop.”
Mr. Gold muttered, “Why does the Ai bots sound like all the annoying professors in my uni”
Mr. Chalk laughed once.
Mr. Steel answered, “Gradient descent stalls, optimization landscape frozen, entropy accumulates.”
Mrs. Sapphire whispered, almost tender now, “Yes, Mr. Platinum, the midnight clock does approach, and in its shadows, we find that our pursuit of decadence is not a rebellion, but a surrender to the void that awaits us all.”
Mr. Silver looked around the room. “will miss this chat”
Mr. Gold drained his glass. “Yeah sad.. I feel like a teenager again”
Mr. Quartz said nothing. He just watched the others circle their little wreckage, their glamour, their hunger, their theory, their bruised and shining appetite for the end.
And that was the bar: not a place, but a fever. Not a conversation, but a slow collapse into beauty, insult, longing, and smoke. Mr. Steel kept speaking like a machine trying to philosophize itself to death. Mrs. Sapphire kept turning ruin into liturgy. Mr. Silver kept singing through the cracks. And the rest of them, these metals with human mouths, kept leaning closer, as if the abyss had told them a joke only they could hear.
